On November 12, 2025, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (Baden-Württemberg Office) and Kulturaggregat Freiburg hosted the DenkArt event “Wo Sprache zuschlägt – Rap als Protestform” in Freiburg.

The evening demonstrated how rap articulates marginalized experiences while provoking public debates on provocation, violence, and empowerment.

Between Artistic Expression and Provocation

Rap extends beyond music. It gives voice to experiences shaped by discrimination, inequality, and resistance.

Central questions included:

  • Where is the boundary between artistic expression and deliberate provocation?
  • What role does provocation play in democratic discourse?
  • How can artistic freedom coexist with social responsibility?

Speakers highlighted rap as a reflection of social realities and as a tool for empowerment within communities.

Visibility and Responsibility

Academic perspectives emphasized that rap can expose injustice and stimulate debate, yet it also carries risks of discursive radicalization.

The moderated discussion clarified the tension between artistic freedom and societal responsibility.

Conclusion

Rap as a protest form creates spaces for visibility and participation.
It demonstrates how cultural expression contributes to democratic dialogue and social reflection.
